Who We Are

Insight Economics is a consulting firm uniquely focused on both public policy and corporate strategy. Together, the directors of Insight Economics have had extensive experience in providing high level strategic advice in economics, public policy and business strategy in the public and private sectors.

The firm was originally founded in February 2006, when five consultants, including Dr David Charles and Jon Stanford, left the Allen Consulting Group. The Insight Economics team subsequently joined Deloitte late in 2006. In early 2010, at the end of their three year contracts with Deloitte, David Charles and Jon Stanford joined a third Director, Bill Mountford, to re-establish Insight Economics.

While in government, three Directors held senior positions:

  • Dr David Charles was Secretary of the Commonwealth industry department for five years and subsequently was Australia’s first Consul-General in Berlin
  • Bill Mountford was Director of the Australian Manufacturing Council and CEO of WorkCover Authority of Victoria
  • Jon Stanford was Director of the Bureau of Industry Economics and then head of the Industries, Resources and Environment Division in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

The Directors have also had significant private sector experience. For example, Bill Mountford has had substantial experience as a strategy consultant, David Charles was a founding Director of the Allen Consulting Group, and Jon Stanford and Melanie Kelly were Partners with Deloitte.

The objective of the firm is to provide high level strategic advice to senior executives in government and business. Our clients benefit both from the commitment of a high level of Directors’ time in delivering their projects and from fees that are significantly lower than those charged by the principals of larger firms. Our aim is to provide strategic advice based on the highest quality analysis while providing excellent value for money. The analysis and reports we prepare are designed to be both creative and authoritative and to possess high credibility with key stakeholders, including central government agencies and corporate decision makers.
